Highest governing design authority

Purpose

This Constitution is the highest governing design document for Gridiron Life. It establishes the laws that every mechanic, system, interface, simulation, narrative feature, football feature, life feature, presentation feature, and future GLDE document must follow.

When another document conflicts with GLDE-000, GLDE-000 controls until it is formally amended. Future documents may interpret, expand, or apply the Constitution, but they may not silently override it.

What Gridiron Life is

Core Identity

Gridiron Life is a life simulation set in the world of American football. The objective is not merely to win football games.

The objective is to live an entire football life, experience its consequences, and leave behind a legacy. Football is the profession. Life is the journey.

#

The governing design choice

North Star Rule

Whenever multiple implementations are possible, choose the one that most strengthens the illusion that the user is living a football life—even if it requires more work to build.

This rule governs major systems and small details alike. It applies to progression, interface language, simulation outcomes, media reactions, injuries, finances, relationships, presentation, and the quiet moments between major events.

#

The five design laws

Core Design Pillars

The following pillars define the baseline standard for every Gridiron Life system. A feature does not need to express every pillar equally, but it should not contradict them.

  • Every Moment Matters — Ordinary days, relationships, football, family, education, careers, health, finances, and hobbies can all shape a life.
  • Every Choice Has Consequences — Choices should create believable immediate, delayed, visible, and hidden ripple effects.
  • Build Your Legacy — The life and story left behind matter as much as wins, awards, records, and championships.
  • The World Keeps Moving — Teams, leagues, people, relationships, careers, media, and history continue changing with or without the player.
  • Football Is Part of Life — Football is central, but it must continuously interact with health, family, identity, money, reputation, opportunity, and time.

Function is not enough

The Feeling Test

Features should be evaluated not only by what they do, but by the feeling they create for the user. Gridiron Life should make key life and football moments feel distinct, earned, and memorable.

The emotional target is part of the design requirement. A technically correct feature that creates the wrong feeling should be reconsidered.

  • Character Creation → Possibility
  • First Game → Excitement
  • Draft Day → Validation
  • Injury → Uncertainty
  • Championship → Triumph
  • Retirement → Reflection
  • Final Legacy → Fulfillment

Permanent documentation language

User and Player Terminology

The word user means the real person playing Gridiron Life. The word player means the in-game character or football participant.

Documentation should avoid using player ambiguously when discussing the real user. Clear language matters because Gridiron Life contains both a real user and many in-world football players.

#

No isolated major systems

Life and Football Integration

Life and football must continuously influence each other. Football success should affect the shape of a life, and life choices should affect football preparation, opportunity, risk, and career trajectory.

No major system should exist as an isolated menu disconnected from the wider life. Relationships, injuries, finances, identity, time, reputation, and opportunity should repeatedly touch football systems and be touched by them.

  • Relationships affect focus, opportunity, reputation, and wellbeing.
  • Injuries affect career, identity, finances, family, and future choices.
  • Football success affects fame, pressure, wealth, relationships, and legacy.
  • Life choices affect preparation, availability, risk, and career trajectory.
#

Believable ripple effects

Choice and Consequence Standard

Choices should be meaningful, fit the character’s current context, and have believable consequences. They should avoid obvious correct-answer design whenever possible.

Some outcomes should be immediate and visible. Others may be delayed, hidden, uncertain, or only understood later. Not every consequence must be dramatic, but it should contribute to the sense of a coherent life.

  • Choices should respect prior history and relationships.
  • Choices should fit the current life stage, football context, and available opportunities.
  • Choices should sometimes create delayed or uncertain outcomes.
  • Choices should avoid feeling like disconnected prompts with no lasting meaning.
#

The world does not wait

Living World Standard

The world must not wait passively for the user. Gridiron Life should continue to generate motion, change, opportunity, loss, and history beyond the user’s direct choices.

The user should feel they are living inside a world that has its own momentum. That world should remember what happened and continue evolving across seasons, careers, relationships, and eras.

  • Leagues evolve.
  • Rosters change.
  • Characters age.
  • Relationships change independently.
  • Careers begin and end.
  • Media narratives develop.
  • Records and history accumulate.
  • Opportunities appear and disappear.
#

The meaning of a life lived

Legacy Standard

The game ends with the meaning of the life lived, not merely a football score. Wins, awards, records, and championships matter, but they are not the only measures of a life.

Legacy should account for what the user built, protected, repaired, lost, influenced, and left behind. The final remembrance should feel like a conclusion to a life, not a summary screen detached from everything that came before.

  • Football accomplishments
  • Relationships
  • Family
  • Influence
  • Reputation
  • Wealth and stewardship
  • Failures
  • Recovery
  • Personal growth
  • Impact on others
  • Final remembrance

How canon is governed

Document Authority and Status

GLDE documents use status labels to communicate authority and readiness. Ratified documents are canonical. Drafts may guide work but are not final canon. Superseded documents remain accessible for history but no longer govern.

Any contradiction should be resolved in favor of the higher-authority or later-ratified document. GLDE-000 has the highest authority.

  • Planned — Reserved or proposed, but not yet authored enough to guide implementation.
  • Draft — Useful for planning, but not final canon.
  • Review — Close to canonical, pending review and approval.
  • Ratified — Canonical and governing.
  • Superseded — Preserved for history, but replaced by a later authority.
  • Archived — Retained for reference, no longer active guidance.
#

Deliberate constitutional change

Amendment Rule

The Constitution may evolve, but changes must be deliberate. Constitutional meaning should not be changed silently during unrelated implementation work.

Every amendment must explain why the change is needed, which principles or documents are affected, how the version changes, and how the revision history records the amendment. Ratification must be explicit.

  • Reason for change
  • Affected principles and documents
  • Version update
  • Revision-history entry
  • Explicit ratification

The last question

Final Governing Test

Every proposed feature, system, interface, narrative beat, football mechanic, media element, and life event should eventually face the same final test.

Does this feature help the user feel that they are living a coherent, consequential, evolving football life—and that the life they build will be remembered? If not, reconsider it.
